Limitations often create the greatest art.
Through college and my early 20’s, I didn’t have much disposable income so buying new pillows, wreaths, or any form of holiday home decor wasn’t really an option. If I wanted to design a space that felt like home, I was going to have to get creative, and that almost always meant picking up some free home decor pieces from nature.
Yes, the falling leaves, discarded crab apples, and sticks from the bush that somehow died over the summer, all make the perfect tools to create decorations for the season. While not all of us decorate our homes for the seasons, I love to have a few pieces that match the color scheme of the outdoors and help me to create a mood of groundedness in a season that almost always has us feeling like we’re being blown away. (In Ayurveda, we call this season Vata, where it’s cooler, dry, and filled with too much air.)
This year, I went full force and attempted to make my own wreath from things I found around the yard. While it’s less than perfect, it always brings a smile to my face when I come through the front door and see it. I’ve also displayed dried corn that I purchased last year and stored away, fresh gourds that we’ll cook at the end of the season, and a bundle of wheat we purchased at Trader Joe’s. All of these things were inexpensive and were either free, will be used again, or can be added to our meals so that nothing is wasted. These decorations even inspired my latest chalk pastel painting.
The feeling of home doesn’t have to come with expensive purchases or even buying something new every single season. A slow home is one that develops over time, stays in tune with the seasons, and appreciates all that we have right now at this moment. By adding a little of the outdoors to your indoors you can connect with the season you’re in and find some grounding this season. Plus it feels extra festive for any guests you have over.
What can you find, just in your backyard, that you can use to create that homey feeling this season? Hit reply and let me know what you create!
