A Slow, Joyful Return to Creativity

You were born
Creative

There’s a quiet kind of magic in noticing what’s right in front of us—a lemon, Seasonal fruits, the colors of a memory.

In these gentle, two-hour workshops in Denver, we gather not to become masters, but to remember. To pause, to play, and to let our creativity breathe again. We use gouache—an in-between kind of paint, not quite watercolor, not quite acrylic—to explore everyday objects and witness the beauty in their imperfection. Like us, they are layered and luminous, and never quite the same from one moment to the next.

This isn’t about painting “well.” It’s about painting honestly.
About showing up as you are, dipping your brush in color, and watching something unfold.

All levels are welcome here. Whether you haven’t held a brush since school days or you’ve filled journals with sketches, there’s room for you. Ages 10 and up can join, making it a sweet moment for mothers and daughters, aunties and nieces, or anyone wanting to share space and create alongside someone they love.

You’ll learn a few basic techniques—composition, color mixing, how to guide gouache across the page—just enough to get your hands moving and your mind to soften. We’ll talk about embracing our own unique style and letting go of the need for perfection. I’ve found over and over again: the moment we stop performing and start playing, the real art begins.

I know this because I’ve lived it.

Painting has carried me through so many seasons—when I lost myself in the whirlwind of my twenties, I painted to feel steady again. When I became a mother, I picked up my brush to remember who I was beyond the diapers and the feedings. Not to escape the beauty of motherhood, but to hold it gently in one hand while reclaiming my own soul in the other.

Art has always been how I come home to myself.
And I’ve come to believe this deeply: you were born creative. We all were. Sometimes we just forget.

Support Your Health

Art is medicine. Not metaphorically—literally.

Art is medicine and science proves it. Painting lowers cortisol, reduces anxiety like meditation, and activates your parasympathetic nervous system. Twenty minutes of creating equals two weeks of exercise for your brain. Gouache (our medium of choice for these workshops) is scientifically proven to be one of the most calming art supplies available (Oil Pastel being the other). And the healing doesn’t stop when you leave the workshop. Art in your home, especially nature imagery, becomes a daily visual anchor, regulating your nervous system and calling you back to yourself.

These aren’t just paintings. They’re portals.

They’re tools to reclaim lost parts of your soul. In a culture designed to keep you disconnected, surrounding yourself with beauty and making time to create is rebellion.

Your creativity is medicine. Your art is power. And you were born knowing this—it’s time to remember.

What People Are Saying

Embrace imperfection and try something new & fun for yourself! I had the pleasure of attending a painting workshop with Katie & Modern Magic and I'm so glad I did. Katie is super supportive, smart in her craft and kind in her approach and ideas. I had no idea what to expect, went in with an open mind and had a blast. I thought I couldn't create art until this workshop and am grateful for writing a new story!

  • 2-hour Denver Painting Workshop
  • All professional-grade painting supplies provided
  • Explore everyday objects through gouache
  • Ages 15+ • All are welcome

Come as you are—messy, tired, inspired, unsure.
Leave with a heart that feels more like you.
And maybe, just maybe, a painting you’ll want to frame.

You do NOT have to be female to attend these workshops; however, the vocabulary I use is female-focused, just as we have been used to hearing male-focused language our whole lives.

Celebrating Life’s
Beautiful Thresholds

These workshops are also a meaningful way to mark life’s sacred transitions.

Come celebrate a bride-to-be with a slow, laughter-filled afternoon of painting as an alternative bachelorette party.
Honor a daughter stepping into womanhood with a gentle, guided creative experience.
Or gift a new mom the sweetest kind of time—two quiet hours to remember herself as more than what she gives.

There’s no pressure to create a masterpiece. You may walk away with a painting you proudly hang on your wall, or one that reminds you to try again. Either way, you’ll leave with something deeper: a spark, a memory, a reconnection to your creative fire.

What People Are Saying

Katie creates a fun, engaging and thoughtful space to let our own creativity out during her workshops. And when we get too critical of ourselves (who me? Definitely not me...) she is there to guide you back to why art is important. Giggles abounded, and such fun was had. Just never enough time!!

Gouache paints are a water based paint, which means the wash out of clothes. So wear anything that’s comfortable and makes you feel confident!

Workshops in the greenhouse: Be sure to wear layers as the temperature can change. Also bug spray in summer and fall months is never a bad idea!

No. Adding food and drink will significantly increase the cost of the workshop and often leave leftovers that just have to be thrown out. Feel free to bring your own snacks and drinks (extras to share, if you’d like) Be sure to have a lid on your drink so you don’t accidentally use it as a water cup!

Yes! I love that men want to connect with their creativity too.

Please make sure they’re comfortable with language that is geared towards women. Everything I talk about when it comes to creative energy applies to men too.

We have just lived in a society where women have had to adjust the language to fit their mold vs. men having to do this. In my workshops, the opposite will be true. If they feel comfortable being around a large group of women and feminine language, they are welcome to join!

Yes! I love hosting private events whether in this same space or in the space of your choosing (me and my little wagon of art supplies can go almost anywhere!) Please note that private events start at $500 with a minimum of 5 people and a cost per head after 8. If you need a space for hosting that’s additional. Send me an email here to let me know what you’re thinking and when you’d like to have this workshop!

Yes! I love that you are already ready to frame your piece. Check out my framing guide here
