In the last year I’ve gotten really into following the cycles of the moon. Not because I think that moon magic will all of a sudden make my deepest wishes come true, but because it’s creates this natural rhythm within my life that allows me to check in and feel really grounded. The same kind of feeling I get in a calm and cozy home.
For those who are new to lunar cycles, they happen every 29 days where we watch the moon slowly grow (waxing) in the sky until it reaches its peak amount of light, a full moon, and then slowly fade into darkness (waning). Before the development of the calendar, the moon was how we knew where we were in a cycle and gave us our own kind of slow moving clock to live by. But what I love most about the rhythms of the moon, is how they bring me back to the present. When I take the time to know where the moon is in her cycle I can tune in to what’s happening within mine too.
I do this by journaling on the new moon and the full moon.
On the new moon when we start with a clean slate and the energy around us is low, I can think about what I want to create or build during this next cycle. So I start with questions that revolve around my personal values and how I want to work towards them. For me this is always creation and connection. Therefore my new moon journal questions are:
- What do you want from your life in general?
- What do you want to grow over the next 29 days?
- What project/s will you focus on?
These questions give me a clear map for the next month to get intentional with my time and energy. Anytime I think about it (Usually when I see that crescent moon in the sky) I can ask myself, am I aligning with my goals this month?
Then, on the full moon, when our energy is at it’s max I can reprioritize to get things done and accomplish these goals. As the moon starts to wane, my energy will become less and less until we reach the dark moon (the two days before a new moon) when we’re invited to release anything from this last cycle that no longer serves us–limiting beliefs, projects that didn’t make the cut, failures, and so on.
The full moon is about checking in and starting to close out your projects. So journaling questions for this include:
- How have you aligned with your values since the new moon?
- Where do you need to add more boundaries?
- What self care rituals can you focus on during the fading moon?
- With your limited energy as the moon fades, where do you want to focus your energy? What projects can you realistically close out before the new moon?
Other full moon rituals I like to take advantage of are:
- Pulling tarot and journaling about what comes up
- Taking a full moon restorative class like this one
- Drawing a bath with epsom salt, sea salt, and your favorite essential oils (lavender and eucalyptus are great options!)
