Space is precious. The space that you leave in your day to go for a walk or meditate. The space you take up when speaking your mind and honoring yourself. And the space that you live in and the objects that occupy it. All avenues of space are precious because they’re limited and therefore what fills them (or doesn’t) needs to be intentional. The same is true for art on our walls and yet I still believe you can never have enough art.
Whether you’re a maximalist wanting to fill every inch of space on your walls or a minimalist looking for just the right pieces to speak to you, I truly believe that you can continue to collect art throughout your life, and you should.
A single painting has the power to bring us back to a moment of time. It could be when you bought the piece, or the memory it touched when you first saw it. The lighting in a piece could remind you of better days ahead or the power of the piece can instill in you your own strength you didn’t know you had. We are rooted in stories, and visual stories have been a part of our cultures since the very beginning. Art is ingrained in us.
As someone who collects art and makes it, it can be hard to choose what I add to my walls. But I never put a limit as to how much art I collect, I simply put a limit to how much I display at once. Like all great truths, you can have it all, you just can’t have it all at the same time. And so we curate.
My favorite trick to collecting and displaying art is knowing that I have full permission to change things up whenever I want. Move a painting from this wall to that wall. Reorganize how a gallery wall is displayed. And best of all, layer images in a frame to make them easy to change up when I just need something new in my space.
In the video below, I show you just what I mean about layering art in frames and how I keep my space feeling fresh and inspired every season by having a collection of art that can easily be switched up anytime I need (8×10 prints for the win!)
Life is too short not to be surrounded by artwork that brings you joy and inspires you. Buy the art and utilize this secret trick to give each piece its own season in your life.
