Boundaries Original

18×24 Mixed Media on Paper (Ink, Gouache, Soft Pastel)

This piece is about water’s boundaries. About flow. The first attempt at a new technique where I simply poured water onto the paper and let it create it’s own boundaries. Then layers of ink were applied and let free to move on their own.

Every painting is built upon many layers, just like the layers of self these works so often represent. The second layer of self is know for creativity, and it’s element is associated with water. There needs to be flow, no blockages or dams in the way, just a space for energy to move. At the same time, water needs boundaries in order to flow.

Look closely and you’ll notice how elements of the landscape cross over the boundaries of that free-flowing ink base, as if they’re stepping out of the painting, like they need to take up more space. Water, creativity, a sense of self create boundaries for us. We get to choose which ones are needed and which ones get to be released. That’s the thing about becoming an adult. You have to learn which boundaries were made to teach you and keep you safe as a child, and which ones were meant to cage you in. As an adult, both are allowed to reshaped or let go of completely.
