Stepping into the realm of interior design photography is always an exhilarating journey, especially when presented with the opportunity to capture the beauty of a mid-century modern home. Recently, I had the pleasure of orchestrating a photoshoot that showcased the timeless beauty of a mid-century modern dwelling from the design mind of Amanda at FORM Studio, complete with two bathrooms, two bedrooms, and an office space.

The Art of Layering
One of the key principles we embraced throughout the shoot was the art of layering—the art of seamlessly blending the old with the new to create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. Amanda carefully curated a selection of vintage textiles, artwork, and furnishings to add depth and character to each space. By layering these elements thoughtfully, we were able to infuse the home with personality and charm while honoring its mid-century roots.
As with all photoshoots, we played with mixing up her art, plants, and textiles to make the most of each photo. But don’t let that fool you, every room she designed had layers and layers of vintage and new that made them interesting to look at and provided an extra level of cozy to the space.

Don’t Be Afraid of Texture
In addition to layering, she also explored the transformative power of texture. From a variety of throw blankets to tactile rugs and woven pillows (one even made from a vintage fabric she found), texture played a pivotal role in elevating the design aesthetic of each room. By incorporating a variety of textures, she was able to create visual interest and depth, inviting guests to explore and engage with their surroundings. These layers of texture also make the photos that much more interesting to look at and explore.

Mid-Century Modern Decor
Of course, no mid-century modern home would be complete without a nod to the era’s iconic design elements, such as bold patterns and vibrant colors. She experimented with wallpaper in some spaces, balancing it with areas of crisp white walls in other areas to maintain a sense of balance and cohesion. In other rooms, Amanda introduced pops of color through accessories like red frames or statement throw pillows found on travels, adding warmth and personality to the overall design scheme. These pops of color made the photos so much more fun to take always giving me a new perspective to shoot. The layering of new, and old, and finds from around the world had me feeling inspired in every room we shot in.

Gallery Wall Fun
Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of the shoot was her home office with epic gallery walls. Amanda curated an eclectic mix of artwork, photographs, and vintage finds, layering them together to create a visually dynamic focal point in the space on two opposing walls. This playful approach to design injected a sense of personality and whimsy into the space, inviting guests to experience the home in a truly unique and memorable way. It was also so much fun to shoot as I explored her artwork and got to look through the lens of layers of color, line and texture. (The epic drapes with their bold pattern didn’t hurt in showing off how fun this space could be!)

Mid-Century Modern Photoshoot
In essence, this photoshoot was a celebration of the art of interior design—a testament to the transformative power of layering, texture, and color. By embracing these principles, we were able to capture the timeless beauty and effortless elegance of mid-century modern design, inviting viewers to be inspired and enchanted by the possibilities of home, and to have more photos to show off in her every growing portfolio of work!
