As an artist and a soon to be new mother, there’s nothing quite like the joy of crafting a nursery that captures the spirit of adventure and exploration. For my latest project, I embarked on a journey to create an Indiana Jones/Safari themed nursery that would ignite the imagination and provide a cozy retreat for my little one, Tobias.
Bring in Elements From Around the World
Drawing inspiration from our travels around the world, I curated a collection of artwork and items that would infuse the space with a sense of wanderlust and discovery. From vibrant tapestries to intricately carved masks, each piece tells a story and adds a touch of authenticity to the room.
Indiana Jones Nursery Paint Colors
To set the stage for our safari-inspired sanctuary, I chose the rich hues of Magnolia Home’s Wellington Green for the accent walls, evoking the lush landscapes of far-off jungles. Paired with crisp True White accents, the color palette brings a sense of balance and serenity to the space.
Adding a playful twist, I hand-painted squiggles on one wall to mimic the whimsical vines of a jungle canopy. This simple yet striking detail adds an element of whimsy and charm, inviting little explorers to embark on their own adventure.

Save by Repurposing
I repurposed old furniture and accessories, breathing new life into forgotten treasures. An old dresser, once used to store art supplies, now serves as a functional storage solution, while a bulletin board with upholstery over it provides a creative display space for artwork and mementos.
For the pièce de résistance, I transformed a desk we already had, that looked straight out of Indiana Jones’s office, into a unique changing table. This unexpected touch adds a sense of adventure and nostalgia to the room, while also providing a practical solution for diaper changes. It will also stay in the room for the day that Tobias actually needs a desk.

Whimsical Art in Your Nursery
To add a personal touch, I incorporated a three-part series of Tobias and Mozi’s travel adventures, available on the Modern Magic website as prints and stationery. These charming illustrations not only capture the imagination but also serve as a reminder of the importance of curiosity and exploration.

Add light to The Space
With only one window in the room, it was crucial to maximize natural light and create a bright, inviting atmosphere. I installed a new light fixture with a rattan shade, casting a warm glow and creating a cozy ambiance. This subtle addition adds a touch of whimsy and elevates the overall aesthetic of the room. It also has a built in fan to keep the room cool during our hot summers on the second story of our home.
For comfort and practicality, I opted for a puzzle piece rug from House of Noa. Designed to resemble a high-end rug, it’s made specifically for a kid’s room, making it easy to clean and soft enough for playtime tumbles.
Lastly, I added a playful touch with a hamper shaped like a bear from West Elm. Not only does it serve as a functional storage solution for toys and blankets, but it also adds a touch of whimsy and personality to the space.
When in Doubt, Add Wallpaper
When it comes to adding the finishing touches to your nursery, wallpaper is an easy and effective way to inject color, texture, and whimsy into the room. It wasn’t in the budget at this time for our Nursery but that doesn’t mean it won’t be added in the future! At Modern Magic, I offer a variety of patterns to choose from, allowing you to create a space that’s as unique and enchanting as your little one. So go ahead, let your imagination run wild and create a nursery that’s truly one-of-a-kind.
