Story Behind The Art
In my favorite book of Tarot, The Tarot Handbook: Practical Applications of Ancient Visual Symbols by Angeles Arrien, there is a story about the Queen of Wands, in which a woman continues to transition and transform throughout her life, and alongside her is her familiar, which is a black jaguar that stands by her side. When she transitions, the jaguar transitions, and so when she becomes her next self, the black jaguar transforms with lighter fur to that of the common jaguar, and when she finds her next self, the jaguar is on its way to transition into a lion, but she pinches its nose and stops its transition so that it stays a jaguar. She does this because the black spots that cover its body are a reminder of the darkness she has faced and something she doesn’t want to forget.
I created New Skin as part of a paired artwork set exploring this process of becoming. Together, the two paintings tell a larger story about transformation, the experiences that shape us, and the wisdom we carry into each new version of ourselves. They are designed to live together as one complete work, and are sold exclusively as a set of two prints.
Bring both pieces into your home as a reminder that you can continue to transform without forgetting the person you've been along the way.
Care
To ensure the longevity of your piece please frame right away. Natural light and exposure to air or water are the enemy of artwork. A glass frame (as opposed to plastic) is always preferred. Choose a spot on the wall out of direct sunlight. For original artworks I always suggest having them framed by a professional framer for a sealed back that further portects your artwork.
