This last year I’ve been on a journey, a soul search if you will. It’s been a day-by-day journey of separating out the parts of me that are truly me and the parts that have been curated in order to fit in. I often go back to things I knew to be true at 16 but have forgotten somewhere along the road to adulthood. This is why it felt appropriate to grab the book Women Who Run With Wolves when I found it on a shelf of a magical little shop in Denver.
I have been told at least 10 times over the last decade that I needed to read this book. It’s never been available at the library and I never felt the need to buy it so I always brushed it off. But as I browsed the shelves of eclectic books (some might call them “woo woo”) I stumbled upon this single copy and thought, this is what I’ve been looking for.
It was exactly what I was looking for.
Women Who Run With Wolves tells the story of original fables from different cultures and breaks the archetypes down into insights all women should know when it comes to getting in touch with their souls. To embrace who they were always meant to be and not just who society wants them to be. I find that I have to read this book slowly. One fable at a time with breaks in-between. It’s deep. Each story has layers and layers of wisdom that need to be absorbed slowly. I often find that after reading a few pages I need to journal about how it applies to my life, where I see myself in this fable, and what it means for me in my everyday life.
It only felt more perfect after starting this book and falling in love with the idea of embracing my wolf woman, that I should be commissioned to paint a wolf for a friend. Nothing is a coincidence. So while I rarely paint animals (their fur is a whole different challenge) I knew I had to say yes to this project. I needed to explore this wolf as if I was exploring my own spirit, and the end result turned into one of my favorite projects. A piece that feels deeply personal and universal all at the same time.
