I remember the moment I found out the company I worked for would be closing its doors. It was the height of Covid and the last 7-days had been the hardest I’d ever worked. I was overcome with grief that the dream of this company would come to an end and also, so much relief. The truth was, I was dying inside and my body and mind couldn’t continue on like this for much longer, I was beyond burnout.
We often don’t think about self-care until it’s too late.
We get a diagnosis that forces us to take action, we’re stuck in bed for days sicker than a dog, or the spark that made us who we are, just seems to be dimmer, sometimes its gone out completely.
I could feel how tired I was. I had terrible adult acne (which I’ve never had). I was anxious all the time. But I just thought this is what it means to be on the Director level. Even working in the health and wellness industry, self-care was on the very bottom of my to-do list.
Self-care will have to come into your life eventually, you get to decide if it’s in the case of preventative care or the much more extensive, time-consuming, and costly process of healing.
The business owners I work with, the friends I talk to, almost everyone I know has a hard time with slowing down and making space for their own health. It often feels selfish or like a waste of time. But make sure you are in a healthy headspace is the best thing you can do for yourself, your community, and your business.
There are a million self-care articles out there to help you find your own practice. I don’t need to list out the ways you can care for yourself. What I can tell you is that by prioritizing my needs I’ve found so much more happiness. And when I’m in a good space, I can spread that joy to my community.
I don’t know what your body needs right now. But I can almost guarantee its rest and nourishment. Especially during the winter season, we need things to slow down. So if you would, I would love for you to leave a comment and tell me one (just one) way that you can start prioritizing self-care in your day-to-day. And if you don’t know what you can do, still leave a comment and tell me that. I’d love to give you some thoughts on a single step you can take to show yourself some self-love and keep you at your best.
You deserve moments to yourself. You deserve to be healthy and happy. You are worthy of putting yourself first and putting down boundaries. Any way that I can help you with that, I’m here for you!
