The holiday season is just around the corner, and with it comes the joy of hosting friends and family. Whether you’re expecting overnight guests or just planning to spend quality time with loved ones, creating a welcoming and cozy guest room is essential. I understand the importance of crafting spaces that exude warmth, style, and creativity. Here’s a guide to prepare your guest room for the holidays, ensuring your guests have a memorable stay.
Create Space For Your Guests
In our home, for the last two years we’ve had two guests rooms ready for friends and family to come and stay with us. However, as our family grows we will eventually be without a guest room for those visiting. But that doesn’t mean we still can’t find ways to create space for our guests.
Yes, having an extra room in the house is a luxury and such a gift, but many of us don’t have floor plans that allow us to lose that square footage 90% of the year. In that case, here are a few options for creating a welcome space for your guests.
Sofa Beds and Murphy Beds
Sofa beds and Murphy beds (the ones that fold up against the wall) are an easy way to include an extra bed in your home without having to take up all that space year round. These can easily be added to your home office or the main sofa in your home can house the extra bed.
Trundle Bed
The trundle bed is a bed that pulls out under a twin sized bed to either create a king size bed or two twin beds. This is a great addition in a kids room. It stays under the bed when it’s not being used and can also be used for sleep overs. When friends and family come to stay, you can move the child from their room and set up the trundle bed like a large king size bed for your guests.
High End Blow Up Mattress
I’ll admit that I’m not a fan of blow up mattresses, they always deflate on me. But I’ve been told that this list of suggested mattress are breaking the mold. At the very least, kids can easily sleep on these if you need to convert a kids room into a guest room or have extra children staying in your space.
Revamp the Bedding
Updating your guest room bedding is the first step in creating a comfortable and inviting space. Fresh pillows are a must, and I recommend having a variety of firmness levels to suit your guests’ preferences. (My number one complaint when staying away from home is not having a pillow that’s comfortable). When it comes to sheets, opt for high-quality, soft linens that promise a luxurious night’s sleep and choose either white that’s easy to bleach if stains occur or something dark that hides stains. And don’t forget an assortment of blankets to cater to different comfort needs – from lightweight throws to warm and cozy duvets. I also love to update the throw pillows and footer blanket to match the season.
Add a Touch of Holiday Magic
The holidays are a perfect time to infuse your guest room with a festive atmosphere. Consider incorporating holiday-themed decor into the space, such as wreaths, garlands, or twinkling string lights. Simple touches like a holiday-scented candle can instantly transform the room into a winter wonderland. Remember, you don’t need to go overboard with decorations; a few well-placed elements can create a cozy and inviting ambiance without making the space feel cluttered.
The Power of Artwork
Artwork plays a crucial role in setting the mood and telling a story in any space. In your guest room, select artwork that resonates with the essence of Modern Magic – slow living, creativity, and the beauty of home. Consider artwork that represents your family’s aesthetic and values. Each piece should evoke a sense of calm and inspire deep conversations. By carefully curating your artwork, you can create a meaningful and thought-provoking environment for your guests. These slow living scenes are a great addition to any guest room.
Building Trust Through Images
Incorporating personal photographs can help build trust and create a sense of intimacy. My aunt has different framed photos that she’ll switch out depending on who visits. It’s so fun to see photos of yourself and treasured memories on display when you come to visit. Layer photos in frames to make it easy to switch out or offer up the framed photo as a holiday gift to your guest.
A Thoughtful Welcome
Extend a warm welcome to your guests by including a gift basket in their room. Make it extra special by featuring your favorite Modern Magic print, allowing them to take a piece of your essence home with them. Add a toiletry basket stocked with essentials like toothpaste, lotion, shampoo, and extra toothbrushes, ensuring your guests have everything they might have forgotten along with their towel set (again dark colors work well to avoid showing stains). This considerate touch will make your visitors feel cared for and appreciated.
Preparing your guest room for the holidays is an opportunity to create a welcoming and memorable experience for your guests. By revamping the bedding, adding holiday decorations, curating meaningful artwork, and offering thoughtful amenities, you can set the stage for deep conversations and lasting connections. Remember, it’s the little details that make all the difference.
