When is the last time you took your relationship to the mat? The yoga mat that is.
I don’t know about you but I’m feeling the claustrophobia of being stuck inside. Even though we live in a big house with a yard now, every day the walls seem to get a little closer and I feel a little tighter. Now, with Denver getting called to lock down and I’m sure the rest of Colorado is to follow, I can feel the closeness of our walls more than ever.
Anyone else with me on this?
One thing that we’re trying to bring into our routine is a way to move our bodies together.
Each day during our “lunch break” we go for a walk to get out of the house, give the dog some exercise and experience the gift of fresh air together. Throughout the day we challenge each other to get up and move around and take a break from looking at the screens. But the best thing we’ve done together is practiced yoga. While not a daily thing, we’ll find a class that suits both our needs, bring out the mats, and travel through a flow together. Releasing the tension that’s building in the air, pushing out the walls around us, and reconnecting with our breath again.
Humans were never meant to be so stationary. As hunters, gatherers, farmers, and explorers, we put our bodies to the test. Quarantine has become a new frontier, one of the mind. It’s important to practice daily and weekly rituals that will keep your mind-body connection in good health and strong for however long this could last.
If you don’t already have a yoga practice here are a few tips to get you started:
- Sign up for Ohana Yoga’s online classes. The first two weeks are free. If you fall in love with it, an unlimited monthly subscription is just $39/mo. Classes are live-streamed every day so you know that when you practice, you are practicing with an entire community. AND you don’t just have to practice with your boo, call up a friend and sign up for the same class to practice separately but together.
- If you don’t have a yoga mat just practice on the carpet so you don’t slide around. Other props you can use are soup cans for yoga blocks (or the extra boxes of wine you have stored in the cupboard just in case), a belt or tie for a strap, and your couch cushions for a bolster.
- I love a good Yin or Restorative class to mix it up. Take a class that will also get your body working. In my opinion, a Vinyasa class at the beginning of the week and a Yin/Restorative class at the end is a great flow to get into.
- Set up next to each other to be in flow together. During the final pose of Savasana feel free to hold hands and get a little more connected on your date night yoga class.
